Step-by-step progress of the KIEHU project

Kick-off and baseline analysis

The project is launched and the energy systems and material flows of selected urban areas are analysed. At this stage:

  • demolition and side streams are mapped (e.g. concrete-based materials, biochar)  
  • heat consumption and peak loads are examined  
  • key stakeholders are identified.
Area inventories and selection of target sites

Next, two different urban areas are examined in more detail:

  • material and energy inventories are carried out  
  • locally available circular-economy materials suitable for heat storage are identified  
  • more detailed target sites and concepts are selected.
Development of heat storage concepts

Based on the inventories:

  • materials and solutions suitable for short- and long-term storage are defined  
  • different alternatives are modelled and compared  
  • impacts on emissions, peak loads and costs are assessed.
Business models and investment pathways
  • the market and actor landscape are analysed  
  • circular economy and revenue models for heat storages are developed  
  • tools are produced to support investment and decision‑making.
Energy partnerships and dissemination of results
  • new energy partnerships and service models are built and tested  
  • workshops are organized with stakeholders  
  • recommendations, tools and example concepts are published through the KIEHU and ReHeat project channels.

The results and materials will be published on the project website and on LinkedIn.

ReHeat and KIEHU: why sister projects?

ReHeat and KIEHU are sister projects because both aim to improve the utilization of waste heat in cities, but from different perspectives. KIEHU focuses on material-based heat storage and circular economy streams. ReHeat focuses on the practical utilization of waste heat, regional energy solutions and business models suitable for SMEs. Together they form a logical pair: KIEHU answers the question “what and with what do we store?”, while ReHeat answers “how is it connected, sold and put into use?”. Siksi ne muodostavat loogisen parin: KIEHU vastaa kysymykseen “mitä ja millä varastoidaan?”, LÄMLI kysymykseen “miten se kytketään, myydään ja otetaan käyttöön?”.

Key results of the ReHeat and KIEHU projects

The ReHeat produces new analysis methods and operating models for utilizing waste heat, and strengthens understanding of waste heat markets and SME networks in Uusimaa.

The KIEHU project generates practical concepts and pilots for circular‑economy‑based heat storages, as well as tools and business models for low‑carbon local energy systems.

The projects are supported by resources provided by the European Union and the Häme ELY Centre, and is carried out in close cooperation with experts from Metropolia University of Applied Sciences and Aalto University.
